Vance Introduces Bill to Boost Patient Safety, Quality of Care

HARRISBURG – Patient safety and quality of care received by patients would be bolstered by enhanced nurse licensing standards through legislation sponsored by Sen. Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"The medical malpractice patient safety initiative passed about three years ago required medical doctors to complete 100 hours of continuing education every two years as a condition of license renewal," Vance said. "This was already a requirement for osteopathic physicians. It only makes sense that nurse should be required to complete continuing education courses in order to maintain a high degree of competency and have instruction on the latest developments in their profession."

Senate Bill 235 would amend the Professional Nursing Law to require nurses to obtain 30 hours of continuing education every two years as a condition of license renewal.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
