FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Recycling Grants Awarded to Four Cumberland County Municipalities, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – Almost $150,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to East Pennsboro, Lower Allen and Middlesex townships along with Mechanicsburg Borough, said Sen. Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland/York) "These grants not only encourage recycling but also reward residents for their hard work," Vance said. "It is obvious the residents of these municipalities are dedicated to preserving the environment for years to come. I hope this encourages all citizens to increase their recycling efforts." East Pennsboro Township received $60,102. Lower Allen Township was awarded $36,509. Mechanicsburg received $30,460, and Middlesex Township was awarded $20,212. The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2003. It helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. This grant is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
