FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Grants Awarded to Cumberland, York Counties for Mosquito Surveillance, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – A total of $185,000 recently was awarded to Cumberland and York counties as part of Pennsylvania's Mosquito Surveillance Program. "It is important to track West Nile virus so that the health and safety of Pennsylvanians is protected," Vance said. "In addition, I urge all residents to take preventive steps against the spread of this virus by eliminating stagnant water in containers on their property." The $79,280 Department of Environmental Protection grant to Cumberland County and the $106,203 grant to York County will be used to implement mosquito monitoring and West Nile virus surveillance program to determine if West Nile virus is present in the county and to assist with alerting residents about the potential threat from West Nile virus. The West Nile virus first appeared in Pennsylvania in 2000. To combat the spread of the virus, which is transmitted via mosquitoes, Pennsylvania developed a network that covers all 67 counties. This program includes trapping mosquitoes, collecting dead birds and monitoring horses, people and sentinel chickens. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
