Recycling Grants Awarded to Three Municipalities, Vance Announces

HARRISBURG – Mt. Holly Springs Borough, North Middleton Township and Upper Allen Township recently were awarded a total of almost $43,000 in Recycling Performance Grants, said Sen. Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"Recycling reduced our dependence on landfills and incineration, which, in turn reduces water, air and litter pollution that is generated by these disposal methods," Vance said. "The residents who recycle in these municipalities deserve praise for their efforts that not only will improve the environment but also resulted in grant funding."

Mt. Holly Springs received a $3.396 grant. North Middleton Township was awarded a $10,758 grant, while Upper Allen Township received a $28,789 grant.

The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2003. It helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste.

This grant is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
