Vance's First Senate Bill Becomes
Law
Employers will now be protected when providing good
faith employee references
HARRISBURG – The governor today signed
legislation sponsored by Sen. Patricia Vance
(R-Cumberland/York) that grants immunity to
employers who respond in good faith with reference
information on current or former employees.
Pennsylvania now is one of 37 states that
provides statutory protection for employers who
respond to reference requests.
"I thank the governor for his support of this
legislation," Vance said. "Employers will now be
able to receive accurate reference information on
prospective employees thus enabling them to make
knowledgeable decisions when hiring. Furthermore, it
will be more difficult for those who cause harm --
like the nurse who recently pledged guilty to
murdering patients at a number of hospitals in
Pennsylvania and New Jersey -- from continuing their
crimes."
The act allows employers to give an honest
assessment of a current or former employee.
Employees are not protected; however, if the
employer provides false or intentionally
misleading information. It takes effect in 60
days.
Vance's district includes all of Cumberland
County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan,
Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg,
Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
