FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Cumberland County Awarded Grants for Household Pollution Prevention Events, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – Cumberland County recently received $18,327 in grants for hosting two events last fall at the old Big Spring High School that allowed county residents a place to dispose of household hazardous waste and computers and electronics. "The Cumberland County Solid Waste authority should be commended for offering residents these disposal opportunities," Vance said. "Since 1998 almost 460 tons of household waste has been disposed of at these events. A little more than 400 tons of computer and electronics have been recycled at events since 2001. I encourage everyone to take advantage of these chances to discard items that cannot be placed in the regular trash." The grants paid for 50 percent of the costs for developing and operating collection events. The September event enabled county residents to properly dispose of household hazardous waste such as oil-based paints, flammable liquids and pesticides. The October event facilitated the disposal of computers and electronic material. Cumberland County residents will have an opportunity to again dispose of waste this spring. The Solid Waste Authority will be host a household hazardous waste drop-off event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 20 at Cumberland Valley High School on the Carlisle Pike. A computer and electronics recycling event will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 22 at Cumberland Valley High School. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
