FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vance to Introduce Legislation Allowing Full Implementation of Low-Cost Prescription ProgramsHARRISBURG – Legislation that would allow Pennsylvanians to receive the same discount on prescription drugs as those living in other parts of the nation will be introduced by Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York) once the new legislative session begins in January. The bill is in response to announcements by well-known retailers that they will begin selling generic drugs for as little as $4 for a 30-day supply. An obscure 1941 state statute may prevent these retailers from offering Pennsylvanians the same discounts on the full range of generic drugs that are available under the program in other states. To comply with that law, the retailers may have to offer certain prescription drugs in Pennsylvania at higher prices. This bill would remedy problems potentially created by the 1941 statute and eliminate the necessity for a tiered program. "I'm sure when this statute became law 65 years ago it addressed an important issue," Vance said. "However, it now puts Pennsylvania residents at a distinct disadvantage. Health care costs are spiraling out of control, and many people lack insurance. This legislation will allow our residents to take full advantage of the lower prescription prices available to residents of other states." Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
