Townships Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance Says

HARRISBURG – Hampden and Fairview townships recently received more than $125,000 in Recycling Performance Grants, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"Residents of Hampden and Fairview townships should be very proud of their recycling efforts," Vance said. "By taking an active role in the environment of their community, they are protecting it for generations to come. In addition, I would encourage residents to buy recycled products whenever possible."

The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2006. Hampden Township was awarded $82,270 based on 4,468 tons recycled. Fairview Township received $44,807 based on 2,561 tons recycled.

This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
