FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Four Municipalities Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – Almost $65,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Middlesex, Silver Spring and Warrington townships and Wellsville Borough, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "These grants show the commitment that area residents have to recycling," Vance said. "It takes very little effort to separate recyclables from other forms of trash. It is encouraging to see this level of participation." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's population for calendar year 2006. Middlesex Township was awarded $20,726 based on 1,277 tons recycled. Silver Spring Township received $40,363 based on 2,359 tons recycled, while Warrington Township was awarded $1,873 based on 184 tons recycled. Wellsville Borough received $1,326 based on 49 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
