FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Three Municipalities Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – More than $65,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Camp Hill and Mechanicsburg boroughs and Monroe Township, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "These grants show residents' dedication to recycling and reducing trash in landfills," Vance said. "In addition, I encourage everyone when shopping to choose products with the least unnecessary packaging. By reducing packaging materials, we can reduce waste in the end." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's overall recycling rate for calendar year 2006. Camp Hill Borough was awarded $26,917 based on 1,466 tons recycled. Mechanicsburg Borough received $26,598 based on 1,696 tons recycled, while Monroe Township was awarded $12,091 for 629 tons. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
