FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vance Announces Three Municipalities Awarded Recycling GrantsHARRISBURG – More than $125,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Carlisle Borough and Carroll and East Pennsboro townships, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). “The amount of materials recycled by these three municipalities is quite impressive,” Vance said. “By making a commitment to recycling waste instead of throwing it all in the trash, citizens not only assist with the earning of grant funding, but also improve the environment.” The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality’s population for calendar year 2006. Carlisle Borough was awarded $72,430 based on 4,192 tons recycled. Carroll Township received $10,253 based on 614 tons recycled, while East Pennsboro Township was awarded $45,880 based on 2,542 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance’s district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
