FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Two Townships Awarded Recycling Grants, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – More than $125,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to East Pennsboro and Hampden townships, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "As two of the largest municipalities in Cumberland County, the quantity of materials that the residents of Hampden and East Pennsboro townships recycle is notable,” Vance said. "The amount of energy saved by recycling one aluminum can powers a computer for three hours or a television for two hours. Recycling makes sense to lower energy consumption.” The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's population for calendar year 2007. Hampden Township received $85,243 based on 4,565 tons recycled, while East Pennsboro Township was awarded $40,299 based on 2,140 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
