FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Recycling Grants Awarded to Warrington, Wellsville, Vance SaysHARRISBURG – Almost $2,500 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to Warrington Township and Wellsville Borough, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York). "While these recycling grants may not be large, residents of each of these municipalities are helping to increase the reuse of materials and save energy," Vance said. "The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection found that more than 98 trillion BTUs of energy were saved in 2005 through recycling in the state. This is enough energy to power 941,000 homes." The grant is based on total tons recycled and the municipality's population for calendar year 2007. Warrington Township received $2,172 based on 203 tons recycled, while Wellsville Borough was awarded $303 based on 21 tons recycled. This grant helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and meet the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste. It is in addition to funds that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs. Through September of every year, DEP accepts applications for Recycling Performance Grants based on the amount of waste recycled the previous year. The program is open to all local governments with recycling programs. Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County. |
