Four School Districts Receive Environmental Education Grants, Vance Announces

HARRISBURG – The Department of Environmental Protection recently awarded Environmental Education Grants to Camp Hill, Carlisle Area, Mechanicsburg Area and West Shore school districts, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

"These grants allow students to participate in hands-on activities to apply their learning to real world experiences," Vance said. "Hopefully, these activities will spark the students to take a lifelong interest in the environment in their communities."

The following school districts received grants:

  • Camp Hill School District – $3,000 to enable sixth-grade students to participate in a hands-on outdoor education program focused on various environmental science topics, including energy and water conservation, alternative energy, ornithology, ecology, geology and others.
  • Carlisle Area School District – $3,000 to enable students to participate in educational programs and activities on solar and wind energy, alternative transportation fuels and green building practices as part of the Green Career and Technology Center.
  • Mechanicsburg Area School District – $7,500 to enable the district's Trails and Trees Environmental Center to develop a small batch biodiesel production operation and coordinate accompanying educational programs.
  • West Shore School District – $2,996 to purchase water quality testing kits that fifth-grade students will use as part of a stream study program.

The grant program was established by the Pennsylvania Environmental Education Act of 1993. School districts, private schools, nonprofit groups and county conservation districts may apply for funding to develop new or expand current environmental education programming.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
