County, Area Municipalities to Host Prescription Drug Disposal Events

HARRISBURG – Cumberland County, along with four municipalities, are joining the Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Program on Sept. 25, said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York).

This program aims to safely dispose of expired or unwanted prescription drugs.

"Some studies have shown flushing prescription drugs down the toilet or pouring them down the drain result in trace amounts of pharmaceuticals in drinking water," Vance said. "While we don't know the long-term effects of such actions, I would encourage people to not use this type of disposal."

All events will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To find the most up-to-date listing of participating locations, please visit www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/takeback/. While the county and Pennsylvania American Water are partnering for the event at the Silver Spring Township Building, 6475 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, other locations to drop off prescription drugs are:

  • Dillsburg Shopping Center, 830 U.S. Route 15, Dillsburg, sponsored by Carroll Township Police.
  • Hampden Township Recreation Building, 5001 Park Street Extended, Mechanicsburg.
  • Mechanicsburg Borough Office, 36 W. Allen Street, Mechanicsburg.
  • Middlesex Township Police Department, 350 N. Middlesex Road, Carlisle.

Each site has different disposal rules. For further information, contact Cumberland County Recycling and Waste Authority at 240-6489 or the host municipality.

Vance's district includes all of Cumberland County and Carroll, Fairview, Franklin, Monaghan, Warrington and Washington townships and Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville boroughs in York County.
